The rapid developments in the field of
computers in the past four decades can be undoubted} considered as the single
most significant contributing factor responsible for the boost in th
technological developments. The computer has entered each and every field. It
has become the most important tool in all the technological areas including
design and manufacturing.
The entry of computers in the fields of
design and manufacturing has led to the emergence of new areas known as
Computer-Aided Design (CAD) and Computer Aided Manufacturing (CAM).
Computer Aided Design (CAD) : Computer Aided Design (CAD) can
be defined as the use a
computer systems to assist in the creation,
modification, synthesis, analysis, and/or optimization
Computer-Aided
Manufacturing (CAM) : Computer-Aided Manufacturing (CAM) can be
defined as the use of computer system to
plan, manage, and control the manufacturing operations through the direct or
indirect computer interface with the manufacturing machine
.
Traditionally, the design and manufacturing
have been treated as two distinct and separate , activities. However, the
CAD/CAM has led to the greater integration of design and manufacturing.
